Our History

The name Lothlorien comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, meaning “the Land of Flowering Dreams.”
Founded in 1983, Lothlorien first operated out of a small two-horse barn on Maple Road in East Aurora. As the program grew, support from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation made it possible to acquire our current property on Reiter Road in 1986.
Our Purpose
Today, Lothlorien Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. (LTRC) offers inclusive horsemanship and horseback riding opportunities for individuals of all abilities. While many of our riders have cognitive, physical, emotional, or learning disabilities, no diagnosis is required to participate; our doors are open to everyone!
Each year, we welcome more than 500 participants, ages 4 and up, including individuals with special needs, Veterans, at-risk youth, hospice patients, siblings, beginner recreational riders, and more.
Our programs are as diverse as our riders, ranging from therapeutic riding lessons and natural horsemanship workshops to groundwork clinics, reading programs, school and day program field trips, and even Make-A-Wish visits.

At LTRC, we believe that everyone can benefit from the healing power of horses, so our doors are open to all. Our mission is to provide a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment where individuals can experience the rewards of horseback riding and horsemanship.
Our facilities are fully equipped to support riders with disabilities, featuring accessible mounting ramps, a wide range of adaptive equipment, and the partnership of our trusted, specially-trained horses. With these resources, we are able to meet the diverse needs of our riders while always prioritizing safety.
Programs at LTRC are led by certified instructors and supported by more than 200 trained volunteers, all dedicated to delivering the highest quality experiences for every participant.
We do not offer trail rides, pony rides, or one-time rides.

Nestled among the trees in a peaceful, secluded setting, LTRC’s ten-acre facility sits just outside the Village of East Aurora in upstate New York. The center features seven pastures, a 13-stall barn, a spacious outdoor sand riding arena, and the 170’ x 80’ insulated and heated Angel Arena, built in 2015 to ensure year-round comfort.
Families and caregivers are always welcome to watch lessons from the viewing area, while the property also includes an administrative office and on-site housing for the barn manager. As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by charming white picket fences and a perfect view of our beloved herd.
